Sometimes the biggest thing standing between us and what God is calling us to do isn’t necessarily the enemy.
Sometimes it’s what’s familiar.
And familiar doesn’t always mean comfortable.
You can be unhappy where you are and still be afraid to leave it. You know what to expect there. You know how life works there. Stepping into something new means giving up some of that certainty.
And that’s when the questions start.
What if I fail?
What will people think?
What if everyone tells me this is a bad idea?
What if I heard God wrong?
Fear has a way of convincing us that staying where we are is safer than trusting where God may be leading us.
But following Jesus was never about building the safest or most predictable life possible.
When Familiarity Starts Competing With Obedience
Romans 12:2 tells us:
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
The world has plenty of opinions about what makes sense.
Choose the safe option.
Have the whole plan first.
Make sure everyone approves.
Know exactly how it's going to work before you move.
But faith doesn't always work that way.
Think about Abraham.
In Genesis 12:1, God told Abram to leave his country, his people, and his father’s household and go “to the land I will show you.”
Not the land He had already shown him.
The land He would show him.
Hebrews 11:8 tells us Abraham obeyed and went even though he did not know where he was going.
That gets me every time.
God didn't hand Abraham the entire roadmap and then ask him to decide whether he was comfortable with it.
He asked him to move.
Abraham's confidence wasn't in knowing the destination. It was in knowing the One who was leading him.
And sometimes I think we're asking God for information when He's asking us for trust.
We want to know:
Where is this going?
How is this going to work?
What happens after I take this step?
And maybe God isn't showing us step ten because He's asking us to be obedient with step one.
Sometimes Moving Forward Means Letting Go
But there's another side to this.
Sometimes we know there's a next step, but we can't take it because we're still holding tightly to what's behind us.
Maybe it's a career.
A relationship.
An old habit.
An old version of yourself.
Maybe it's even a season that God once used in your life—but that doesn't necessarily mean He's asking you to stay there forever.
We can find ourselves praying:
“God, open the next door.”
While perhaps the harder question is:
“Am I willing to release the door He's asking me to close?”
Philippians 3:13–14 says:
“Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal...”
There is forward movement in following Christ.
That doesn't mean our past didn't matter. It doesn't mean we don't appreciate what God did in a previous season.
But we don't have to build our future around what used to be.
Sometimes the very thing we're afraid to release is the thing keeping us from freely following where God is leading now.
What If Nothing Better Comes?
I think this is where fear gets especially loud.
“What if I let this go and nothing better comes?”
But faith isn't saying, “I know something better is waiting exactly the way I imagine it.”
Faith says:
“God, I don't know what's next, but I trust You more than I trust what's familiar.”
There's a difference.
We're not following God because He promised every next step would be easier, more successful, or more comfortable.
We're following Him because He's God.
First Peter 2:9 reminds us that we are “a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession.”
We are called to belong to Him.
That means fear doesn't get to make our decisions.
Other people's opinions don't get to determine our obedience.
And what's familiar doesn't automatically get to become what's permanent.
Comfort or Calling?
So maybe there are actually two questions worth bringing before God today:
God, what are You asking me to step into?
And:
God, what are You asking me to let go of so I can follow You more freely?
You may not have the entire roadmap.
You may not know exactly what happens after you take the next step.
And you don't need to pretend that uncertainty isn't scary.
But you can know the One you're following.
Don't choose familiarity over obedience simply because you can't see what's ahead.
Take the step God has given you today.
Release what He's asking you to release.
And trust Him with what comes next.
